Web Applications and Infrastructure Tools (Scientist)

Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in science and engineering on behalf of national security. The High-Performance Computing (HPC) Division is seeking a highly qualified Web developer capable of both building custom web-based applications and running open-source tools to support the HPC Division. As Web Applications and Infrastructure Tools Scientist, you will

  • Run the support tools for the HPC Division, including Atlassian Confluence, Ticketing system, LDAP servers and several custom-built web applications
  • Maintain the underlying RHEL server with your strong knowledge of Linux administration, virtual machines and configuration management systems
  • Develop, modify and maintain custom web-based applications using in-depth knowledge of several programming languages, including Python and Django
  • Participate in on-call responsibilities in support of our infrastructure upkeep and solve day-to-day system issues as required
  • Set up and maintain several databases, including MySQL and MongoDB
  • Help develop custom solutions for the HPC Division and find ways to improve and modernize our infrastructure possibly using containers, CI/CD methods, microservices and cloud technologies


Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a STEM field and 4 years of related experience, typically with post-doctoral research experience at a university or National Lab or equivalent experience directly related to the occupation
  • Skills in web application development and authentication methods such as basic, certificate, LDAP, SAML, Kerberos, Oauth, AuthN and AuthZ
  • Experience developing and maintaining web-based applications for customers, including the full lifecycle from planning, developing, testing and maintenance
  • Basic knowledge of web security and best practices such as SSL and OWASP
  • Demonstrated scripting experience in languages such as Bash, Perl, Python, etc.
  • Strong programming skills and knowledge of several languages including Python, PHP, Java or similar languages
  • Strong Linux knowledge and expertise as an administrator
  • Experience using and reporting from one or more production database systems
  • Knowledge of database administration and configuration
  • Outstanding written and oral technical communication skills as evidenced by the production of materials for technical products, reports, documents and/or presentations at professional conferences
  • Active DOE "Q" clearance or ability to obtain
  • This position will be located in Los Alamos with the potential for a hybrid work arrangement (partially onsite/partially offsite) from a location within 2 hours


Desired Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of PHP, Perl and Ruby in support of legacy applications
  • Knowledge of one or more monitoring tools such as Splunk, ELK stack, etc.
  • Experience using, authenticating, configuring and maintaining directory services systems such as 389ds, OpenLDAP, Red Hat Directory Services/IDM, etc.
  • Knowledge of SSSD, pam_ldap or other authentication and authorization mechanisms
  • Knowledge of containerization principles and technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes
  • Experience configuring and leveraging CI/CD methods such as GitLab runners for the automation of unit tests, integration tests and application deployment
  • Knowledge of cloud services such as AWS, Azure, etc.
