Description
About TEGNATEGNA Inc. (NYSE: TGNA) helps people thrive in their local communities by providing the trusted local news and services that matter most. With 64 television stations in 51 U.S. markets, TEGNA reaches more than 100 million people monthly across the web, mobile apps, streaming, and linear television. Together, we are building a sustainable future for local news.
We are looking for a Web Team Lead to own the day-to-day execution and technical leadership of our web platform. In this role, you will lead a group of web engineers, own delivery for your pods, and ensure our web experiences are fast, reliable, accessible, and aligned with broader platform standards.
This role is hands on and technical. You will serve as the primary technical leader for multiple development pods, coordinating work, unblocking engineers, and partnering closely with product, design, backend, CMS, streaming, and QA teams.
In addition to hands-on technical leadership, this role plays a key part in driving sprint execution, enforcing release readiness, and ensuring delivery stays aligned with broader platform priorities. You will help ensure work is well planned, dependencies are understood, and teams consistently deliver high-quality, production-ready code every sprint.
This is a hybrid position based in Knoxville, TN, with regular in-person collaboration across engineering and product teams.
Responsibilities:
Execution and Delivery Leadership
- Own day-to-day execution for web development pods, ensuring work is progressing, blockers are surfaced early, and dependencies are managed
- Drive sprint planning, backlog readiness, and release planning across multiple web pods
- Partner with product and engineering leadership to align sprint goals and release timelines across pods
- Enforce sprint discipline including mid-sprint QA handoff targets, sprint lock, and Definition of Done standards
- Provide visibility into delivery risks, capacity constraints, carry trends, and execution status
- Own release execution for web deployments including rollout strategy, post-release monitoring, and issue triage
Technical Leadership
- Design, develop, and maintain modern web applications using JavaScript or TypeScript and contemporary web frameworks
- Serve as the primary technical point of contact for the web pod, coordinating implementation details and sequencing work across developers
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to web developers, supporting design decisions, code quality, and problem solving
- Lead code reviews and enforce best practices around reliability, performance, accessibility, and maintainability
- Guide the web platform's evolution toward modern, component-based architecture including the transition to Svelte
- Support and improve automated testing and CI/CD pipelines for web applications
Cross-Team Collaboration
- Collaborate closely with product managers, designers, backend engineers, CMS teams, streaming teams, and QA to deliver cohesive end-to-end experiences
- Partner with backend teams on API design, integration patterns, and performance considerations
- Coordinate with CMS and platform services teams to ensure the web experience integrates cleanly with the broader TEGNA One ecosystem
- Act as the primary web point of contact for execution-level questions across the organization
- Communicate technical tradeoffs, timelines, and operational impact clearly to stakeholders
Quality, Performance, and Operations
- Monitor production health, Core Web Vitals, performance metrics, and error reporting, and drive timely remediation
- Identify technical debt and contribute to platform-level improvements and architectural discussions
- Participate in sprint retrospectives and cross-pod technical discussions to drive continuous improvement
- Support web-based video playback and streaming integration quality where applicable
Requirements:
- 5 plus years of professional web development experience on production, client-facing applications
- Strong experience with modern JavaScript or TypeScript frameworks such as React, Next.js, Svelte, or similar
- Experience leading technical execution for teams or pods, including sprint planning and release ownership
- Experience working with a product team to help refine, estimate, and deliver features.
- Solid understanding of web performance optimization, accessibility, SEO, and cross-browser compatibility
- Experience integrating with RESTful APIs and backend services
- Familiarity with automated testing strategies and modern web build and deployment pipelines
- Ability to balance hands-on development with technical leadership and coordination
- Strong communication skills and a collaborative, ownership-driven mindset
Bonus Points
- Experience working in media, streaming, or content-heavy platforms
- Familiarity with video playback technologies and web-based streaming integration
- Experience with Svelte or interest in guiding a platform migration toward Svelte-based architecture
- Experience with feature flags, experimentation, and analytics tooling
- Prior experience contributing to shared design systems or platform libraries
- Experience enforcing sprint discipline and delivery standards across multiple pods
